Schweppes 'Christmas Entertainment' TV Idents by Mother London

These caught my eye whilst infront of the box this holiday. Mother London created the Schweppes idents with the help of director Tom Kuntz. There’s 10 spots altogether and feature the voices of some of Britain’s cult comedians, including Martin Freeman of The Office and Smack the Pony star Doon Mackichan. In an Inspiration Room article the idents are described as taking inspiration from classic Christmas illustrations of the 1950s, drawing on quintessentially British scenes and transposing them to a contemporary setting.

I think they’re fun, and a tad bizarre. The arm business made me sit up sharpish and study. The original brief as written on Campaign’s website was to remind consumers that Schweppes makes Christmas entertainment better. I bet they were a lot of fun to concept for & shoot.

This caught my eye. Now in the top ten favourite.

Happy Christmas everyone.

I urge you to watch this Schweppes ad from back in 2008 if you haven’t see it before, it’s inspired. 5 Stars on Youtube where its title is Schweppes Burst slow motion balloons Ad. Enjoy.

Shame George Patterson Y&R are all in Australia. This gem came from the Melbourne offices. ECD Paul Catmur, CD Ben Coulson, AD Ben Couzens, CW Jim Ingram and agency producer Romanca Jasinski.

The agecnies website is really inspiring, never thought about how much good work is made in Australia. They seem to have an outstanding attitude and it’s no wonder the agebcy won the only Film Gold Lion in Australasia on the closing night of the Cannes International Advertising Festival with this powerful Schweppes ‘Burst’ spot.

If you’ve got time click on the link below and read up on the ad from the Inspiration Room. It’s a great article with all the info in.

And one more ad that had me reaching for a pen.

Watch this: SAMUEL BECKETT 'Play'

Samuel Beckett (1906-89)

Mark introduced me to this snapshot of Samuel Beckett’s work and instantly I became mesmerised. Partly due to the filmic quality and art direction of the recently filmed version (below), but mostly to power of his incredible use of words. Listen back eyes closed and it becomes even more powerful. The version of play I’ve posted below was directed by Anthony Minghella and released in 2000 for the Beckett on Film project, starring Alan Rickman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliet Stevenson.

Beckett was an Irish avant-garde writer, dramatist and poet. The original one-act play was written by Beckett between 1962-63. I’ll undoubtably now be looking more into the works of Beckett.

I give you an interesting quote John Naish from his pioneering book Enough (2009).

Some of society’s most creative minds are attracted by high salaries and glam cachet to help the advertising and marketing industries push products at us. In earlier times, these people might have been great artists or writers. But increasingly the sheer mass of sophisticated information they churn out just leaves us bewildered.

What does anyone think?

The Night James Brown Saved Boston

I’ve always loved James Brown and his music but this documentary, shown on BBC4 last night, gave a whole new meaning to it. An incredible history lesson. Absolutely UNMISSABLE!! In fact I may watch it again.

You can watch it through BBC iPlayer here

Or in the meantime if you haven’t got an hour and 15 minutes to spare give some of your time to this..
